Information 2007-2008
The following information is provided for you and your parents/guardians in order to make your experiences with the Amity Middle School Concert Band musically enjoyable and educationally productive. Please put these performances on your family’s calendar in order to avoid conflicts and resulting problems.
Performances
For performances, students need to arrive at school, no later than 45 minutes prior to concert time. Dress code for all members is as follows. For boys all black trousers, shoes, black socks, and a white oxford-style shirt. For girls either all black skirt or pants with white top. Skirts must be knee length or longer.
• Winter Concert: January 17th @ 7:00 PM (SNOW DATE Jan. 22nd)
• Spring Concert: May 8th @ 7:00 PM
• Memorial Day Parade: May 26th @ 9:00 AM
• 8th Grade Stepping-Up Ceremony: June (second to last day of school)
Concert Band is a graded course. Music is our Text, Practice is our Homework, and Performance is our Exam. There can be no make-up exam. So PLEASE mark your family calendars to avoid any conflicts. ATTENDANCE is required for all performances! Requests to be excused from any Band performance must be made in writing at least three weeks prior to the performance. Sports and any other extracurricular activities are not accepted for an excused absence.
Rehearsals
Students are expected to have their instrument assembled with music and ready to play within a reasonable amount of time. Rehearsals begin promptly. At the end of each class, appropriate time will be provided for each member to clean his/her instrument and place it in the proper storage location. The MUSIC FACILITY is to remain neat and clean at all times. There is no gum or food in a rehearsal at any time.
Music Lessons
All 7th and 8th grade students will receive group instrumental lessons once a week in addition to the regular band class. Students will be given a schedule that will tell what time and day their lesson will be given.
Grading
Grades are based upon the system shown below.
Behavior/Participation: 40%
Practice/Homework 10%
Performance Evaluation: 20%
Materials (Instrument, Music & Pencil): 20%
Attitude: 10%
Total: 100%
